Playing with Fire bare bones rough cut demo

Hey guys. Thanks for looking. Super rough cut demo process vid here. No fancy singing or guitar playing. Just the bare bones of this song to present to the musicians for recording purposes. This I'm using my blog as a process notebook I wanted to show how I learn these songs. I'm not a trained guitar player but I need it as a composition instrument however frustrating that is. I am a studied Saxophone player and I just haven't put the same kind of energy into playing the guitar. Either that, or it's a more challenging instrument for me.

Either way, I've chosen not to record the guitar parts on this record- or not the main ones, anyway; so that a more intricate and professional sound can be achieved. I think it's the right choice for this record. I'll lay down sax and probably some keys; but the bass, drums and guitar tracks will be laid down by experienced players.

I've chosen master jazz player Chad Tracy to play on this jazzy number with Phil Arapaju on upright bass.

I hope this will create a terrific mood for me to sing/play sax over.

Next week I'm volunteering to be a band coach for Girls Rock Camp. A bunch of my female player friends have already done this for many years: Miss Jackson, Melissa Bryan, and Carrie Clark to name a few.

Progress! Becca is making the costumes:: we're stepping into so much fun. I'm attaching some pics and some video to document our process together.

This Bust is a Must

The bust. It's made of leather, it's gold, with buckles and will be nice and shellac-ed for a cast-iron look. We've taken a few ideas from Beyonce; thank you B. You're costumes are killer. I'm going to solder some funky eyewear too with chains and stuff. It's so Dagger!!

Dancer Costumes

This is La Pistolle in her gold lame dress with the spiney back piece Becca's making. It's base is plastic ferns on wire; but we're going to add a spine and spray paint it so it's all tricked out. The Radixxx theme is organic; very much my thing if you've seen my artwork. Radix is Latin for Root; and I'm taking that literally and figuratively. From the front you won't see a thing; then when they turn around it will be a scene.

Painting a day is OVER! With some money saved I've got my downpayment for the recording process, thanks everybody for your support.

I've switched gears and have started writing new tunes for the upcoming release, Radixxx. On board is local engineer Mike Vasquez at Sweatbox Studio. I also play in his band and have recorded with him numerous times over the years. We're tight, shit's tight, and it's all going down. I'm excited to announce (drumrollllllll) that amazing jazz guitarist Chad Tracy is going to lay down some licks as well as Phil Arapahu on upright bass for the first three songs. I'm not sure who's on drums but my first pick's Kory Cook for this ensemble. Look those guys up they've played in a million awesome bands but they all have one thing in common: they're versed in Jazz and that's really important to me at this time. It's got to swing HARD!

However, after these first 3 recordings I'm going to switch the team up and get all the angles: indie pop, electronica, rock and jazz are said angles.

What makes this process interesting to me is that there are several layers to it:

1. I had to raise some money to get into the studio

2. I have an amazing opportunity to work with a master costume technician (we traded I make websites see my work here: http://www.lipstingmedia.com) These costumes are for the CD release party. (last release I didn't do a thang! But it has sold modestly listen here: ) We've come up with a theme and Becca's getting her designs together and I'll be documenting that. Thanks Becca!

3. I'm studying up on set design: I'm going to paint a back drop so we'll have some original art to look at among the dancers and musicians.

What's confusing is how I'm going to pay for it all! Pressing CDs, Recording, buying costume materials::: I'm overwhelmed.

I do have faith, however, that things will get done if even on a shoestring. That's what being an artist is all about. Working it out creatively.

I want to post pictures and document this process as I go through it. Right now we're working on the costume designs. Normally, this would NOT come first but Becca L Miller is moving to LA in a month. She's just finished her masters at UT (only one of 3 in her class!) so we're full speed ahead.

I've also been writing new tunes after not writing much in the last 2 years besides a couple of numbers. However, 3 -6 songs are already written and either they didn't make it onto the last record or I forgot they existed. I'm recording those demos for the musicians and dancers to learn.

This is it! I'm doing it and it only took deciding to do so. My last record was released in June of '09. I've listened to it today and in my humble opinion it has stood my own test of time. Besides some technical issues that I have with it, I think the songs still stand as original and fresh///If I might say so myself.

If you're out there reading this please check back. I'm going to post band related items more on this blog so I myself can recall how the hell I do what I do.

I've chosen today to start my painting a day fundraiser for my upcoming record: Radixxx. I'll be painting one painting a day for 25 days (maybe 2 sets of this) with the hopes of getting enough scratch together to record the album in a way that is professional and hot. If you know my music, you know my last effort was recorded by me, in my kitchen, with me playing all the instruments. While this was an amazing experience for me; in the end it was not as tight musically as I would want today. That was 2 years ago and I've grown into another Dagger. I'm not a one-woman band any longer and my live shows incorporate visuals, the band, singers, props and dancers. It's a lot of work but it's a multi-layered performance experience that me and the performers can be proud of.

In honor of Foot Patrol's Hung and TJ being on the front of the Austin Chronicle last week ((sorry I'm late...but I just saw it Wed!)) I'm posting an old .mp3 I recorded of TJ Wade talking about his foot fetish and it's early developments. Like Hung I worked with TJ at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually impaired for many years. (in fact when I named my blog "music mania" it was after the long running karaoke on Wed nights at TSB. Many of us musicians, we jammed along with the students if they wanted. When TJ refers to "RI's" that would be me and Hung and others like us that took care on the dorms after school. Love to Hung and his crew! People that also worked at TSB litter their band.

I got in. It's my first public city of Austin exhibit. Art runs wild over there; over 150 works were selected for a year long showing at The People's Gallery. ASH Bash - Fundraiser for the Austin State Hospital

ooh guess what?? Another art show. another music show. another community event I'm happy to be involved in. This time it's ASH Bash - a party and art auction for the Austin State Hospital. As a side note: did you know that the campus of the Austin State Hospital is a historical landmark? It's downright beautiful but creepy There are historic trails to walk and a really old school building and church on campus, too. It's open to the public so if you're in Austin it's worth a visit. Electric Promotions presents: Pixel Pop Fest Feat Austin area artists and musicians to benefit HAAM

Hi cyborgs. I'm so passionate about engaging with my community; so when amazing designer/promo princess Candice Carlisle invited me to present some art at this upcoming HAAM benefit I wanted to do something special.

IDEA: to sketch ahead of time an iconic pop painting (such as a Lichtenstein) art work and paint it live on site. The bigger the better- I'm going to figure out how much time I have and make it huge.

MATERIALS: Acrylic Paints, Paintbrushes, Water, Love.

COMMUNITY: Let's face it: creative, expressive minds are prone to addiction, depression and health problems. I know ALL humans are, but my heart is in the creative community; and most full time creatives don't have health care. Right?? This special community propels Austin forward and gives it it's unique vibe. (OK the nature here is pretty cool too.)

WHAT: http://www.myhaam.org has given my artist friends a lot of mind/body/spirit support. What I'm doing is a live large-scale painting and auctioning said painting. The proceeds will go to HAAM.

But, alas I have committed to making my blogger more active. Many times I'll have quick thought so I'll usually facebook it- but then those thoughts disappear as the steam continues. This week has been a big musical week for me in the thick of the ATX summer. You would think everything comes to a grinding halt mid July but things start picking up around this city. The students have moved out but the tourists are IN.

Anyway Monday this week was a milestone for me as I've finally completed and mixed ONE, just one, track with my friend Producer Mike McCarthy. (http://www.mikemccarthyproducer.com) Because I don't have a record label or $$money, I somehow convinced him (all skill, of course!!) to come over and help me record in my studio kitchen. I'll post later the mp3 after it's mastered this week. It is one of my favorites to date. A BIG thanks to Mike for going out on a limb with me. The song's called "Falls Apart".

That was LATER Monday night. Earlier Monday I rehearsed 2 songs with "The Seas". They're having their CD release at the Beauty Bar this Friday. I go on at 10 pm followed by a killer band "The Latest". That's Bob Taylor's band...I remembered that we were in a rock opera together in the mid 90's at the Electric Lounge: I could BARELY squeak out a tune on my horn. It was my very first Live Sax gig. I remember Buzz Moran played Tenor and I alto. OH and Aileen Adler was the *star* goddess in that piece- She looked so beautiful with her wild pink hair.

So Nurk from the Seas and I are doing a duet for his show- we'll be tied together- that's all I'm sayin' for now. You'll have to come see the show...but I rehearsed with his band who I think is the NICEST band in ATX I know. www.myspace.com/theseasmusic.

Tonight was an amazing practice with The Something Ain't Rights. (and I dislike long and intense rehearsals- for the most part I'll grunt and groan about each and every one...) My OLD old pals Mike Vasquez and Bryan Nelson at back at it on guitar and bass respectively. (Bryan's filling in for Phil Arapaju) I play sax of course. My old band is back!! It used to be called SisterRunNaked. I love Nelson he's so fun and funny. It was nice to hear Mike giving him a hard time about who cares? We've played together off and on for 10 years! I get it now why bands play with the same people in different bands over and over. It's FUN if you can get along.

I checked out Mike's studio control room because he's totally decked it out with some vintage gear, a new white pleather couch, and a bunch of cool posters up. (http://www.sweatboxstudio.com)

A really talented Producer

<\span>We got along pretty good right from the start; An instant connection! A creative that spends most of his time helping other creatives achieve their creative goals in the recording studio. It was disclosed to me that he doesn't take every job, but the ones he finds stimulating. He's an amazing music producer located in Austin, Texas...my hometown. We got together to talk about music and jammed for awhile in his studio. I played drums for awhile, he played this weird guitar/bass thing, then we switched. Lost are the amazing sonic moments...they floated away into the air. I love that! A special time, indeed, very bohemian, just hanging out. Artists' Portrature

Hi out there in cyberland. I've taken some portraits recently that I consider compelling. I have a fascination with artists and musicians; really anyone that is highly creative and immersed in whatever creative discipline. I'm closer to some of these people more than others; but these people all fall into my close hemisphere in some way or another. I hope you appreciate their artistic worlds as much as I do!

This first set is my friend Billy Harvey. I think he is such a highly creative person- a real auteur - controlling production of his music and film career to such an extent- it's inspiring. Why? He is unflinching in the vision of his work. Have you seen his movie Everywhere now? I went to his premier and laughed my ass off- it is really hilarious and heartbreak-warming. We met for a coffee clatch during his brief visit to Austin. In his hands in the right pic is his birth certificate- I can't remember why he pulled the certificate out...

I am quite prolific in other areas, though...I facebook incessantly for instance. I create a lot of web sites, and finally drumroll....I've edited my first video footage. My friend Nathan Espen held this camera for me and caught some great moments in my performance on Nov. 14, 2009 at the 4th annual G Spot Backyard art party. This party always coincides with the East Austin Studio Tour, a fabu art crawl that is very prolific here in ATX.

Cris Burns and Virginia Meza sat in with me at this show- Cris on Guitar and Virg on Cocktail drum with vocoder effects. It was a wild party! Cris projected his video art too. Tonight!!! Just before the Boss' superbowl performance I, DD, made an appearance with my sax at Sweatbox Studios. I recorded a song with Tom Ovans. He mainly plays in Europe: He got four stars in Mojo for his last effort, "Party Girl" ! He was very sweet; (gotta hug and some cash coming for my performance). Me and Mike Vasquez (trumpet) played some memphis style horn section type stuff on a song for Tom- and then DD had a sax solo at the end. Ovans is living right here in lil 'ole Austin Texas.

another SXSW day: Upclose with PJ Harvey, Peter, Bjorn & John, + more

Special shout out thanks to Cris Burns Audio and Jeff Hoskins for allowing me to tag along to their very stessy gig at METV

Just cause they luv me! They know my biggest influence is PJ Harvey.

Hoskins let me in the back door entrance for Peter, Bjorn and John who was up first- had never seen them or listened to their records- besides that mega hit they had with itunes.

They were very charming, very minimalistic and obviously having a great time. I had just read on MTV.com that their last show at Vice Bar was horrible- even stopping in mid tune! But not here- they were looking a little rough around the edges but dressed in shabby-chic suits. LOVED IT. It was chill and quirky.

Next up was my queen:: PJ Harvey. METV had cleared the room- all that was left was the crew and me- posing as a sound tec assistant. In walks PJ with a victorian-ish style dress on, cute strappy heels and dressed all in black. Her hair was curled and she looked so petit- so adorable. I was almost shaking- she was about 5 feet from me. I was trying not to stare and be weird. Along side her were John Parish dressed very dapper- in a nice tan suit.

The sound tests were extensive>>>Polly complained about the strong light burning her forehead. She had a vocal box that looked pretty old school. I didn't hear much when she clicked it - it was pretty subtle and it might have just been reverb. They played some spooky songs laced with a lot of keyboards- the keyboard player was I think from Brooklyn and he had an m-audio keyboard attached to the mac and another keyboard running through amps. They all used VOX classic style ams that were new looking- and one new mini Fender amp. Polly was only singing; and at times they switched instruments and the keyboard player played bass and the bass player played guitar. John Parish switched guitars many times- from a slide dobro (I think!) to a banjo- utilizing his fender (i think) most of the time that had a peace sign on it. The drummer was minimal- until toward the end he got louder with the last 2 songs that were rocker tunes a la the old days.

Polly it seemed was doing a little bit of theater too - "talking" to herself within the song- talking about California and missing England. It is clear to me she has an on and off love affair with the US -- and that she enjoys taking sabbaticals in different parts of the country maybe even recording a bit there. I'd do the same.

After that I raced literally over to my own show with the Somethin' Ain't Right's at the Typewriter Museum. Corienne Rose was on playing their blend of cowpunk with a lovely scorching violin. It was PACKED and we were up next. I smoked it up on the sax whit Phil from The Black on bass, lainy on keyboards, Aaron from Ignorance Park on Drums and Mike Vasquez from legendary Sweatbox Recording Studio on Guitar and Vox.

Not 5 mins after my show I got another lucky break- my friend Jamie Panzer called with a vip pass to Emos- which meant I was going to sneak behind him into the Sonics Showcase. There were lines AROUND the corner and around the corner's corner! But, we waltzed though security in the back and the bar was totally empty! By the time the Sonics got playing the room wasn't even filled yet- the sxsw gatekeepers were too slow on the draw.

So that concluded my night. I was wiped out! But very content. It was truly one of the most unique SXSW in my long career of them.

Finally, collaboration with Tin Hat's Mark Orton completed, posted!

Mark Orton is a very prolific composer, songwriter, and band leader of the group Tin Hat. Some of his movies include: The Real Dirt on Farmer John, Everything's Illuminated, and many more. Anyway, he's very great combining his personal style that stems from jazz and blues with a new style americana from buddies Bill Frizell and John Zorn.

More to my point, he's my brother in law and we collaborated on a song when I was there last summer. I sang James and the Shondell's "Crimson and Clover" and he played his varied instruments. (Eboe, Chello as a bass, melotron or something like that, and a good old acoustic Martin guitar.)

You can hear that song on my last.fm page http://www.last.fm/DD+Dagger. It was the final addition to my new record entitled "Femmie Auteur" It will be the bonus track.

Because.....I recorded and played myself all the instruments on the upcoming release aside from that track. The amazing Cris Burns helped me mix it and put it all together in a nice sounding package with some extra zing-zang.

So the release is near release-able and that makes me very happy. Considering I hadn't recorded anything but a scratch track before this record popped out I'd say I did pretty well. Lets see if I can get some critics to agree.

You never know what music will catch the attention of a person's mind. Could it be the instrumentation, the quality of the voice, what the song's about? Or a simple none of the above.

At any rate, I'm just putting myself out there, once again. Damned if you do, damned if you don't right??

BLAKEEEE please get me into Coachella! I'd met Blake on the airplane going to NYC to play some shows with my buddy Mishka Shubaly. Blake and I sat next to each other on the trip over and made friends. Turns out Blake does promotions for Coachella, and does live lasers and also DJ's.
